  • What size PVC pipe do I need for rural plumbing?

Pipe size depends on what you're using it for. Common domestic and rural sizes include 20mm, 25mm, 32mm and 50mm diameters. Smaller pipes (20–25mm) are often used for garden irrigation or short water runs, while larger pipes (32–50mm) suit main water lines, troughs or tank outlets. Always match the pipe size to the expected water flow, pressure, and connection fittings to avoid blockages or flow issues. If in doubt, it’s worth measuring your existing pipework or bringing a sample to the store.

  • Can I use PVC pipe for outdoor plumbing?

Yes, PVC pipe is widely used outdoors for water systems, irrigation, drainage and stock watering setups. It’s lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to cut and join. However, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can degrade some types of PVC, so above-ground pipes should ideally be UV-rated or protected with paint or covering. For buried installations, ensure the pipe is laid with proper bedding and backfill to prevent damage from soil movement or heavy machinery.

  • What’s the difference between pressure pipe and stormwater pipe?

Pressure pipe is designed to carry water under pressure—like in irrigation systems or tank lines—and is rated for specific pressure loads (e.g. PN9, PN12). It’s typically thicker and stronger than stormwater pipe. Stormwater pipe, on the other hand, is used for gravity-fed drainage systems and isn’t built to handle internal water pressure. Using stormwater pipe in a pressurised system can lead to cracks, leaks or bursts, so it’s important to use the correct type for the job.
