  • What type of mulch is best for garden beds?

Organic mulches like bark, wood chips, sugarcane and lucerne are excellent for garden beds. They help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and break down over time to improve soil quality. For ornamental beds, bark chips are a popular choice due to their long-lasting appearance. Straw or sugarcane mulch works well around veggies, as it's lightweight and easy to spread. When choosing mulch, consider your climate, the type of plants you’re growing, and how much maintenance you’re willing to do.

  • How much soil or mulch do I need?

To estimate the amount you need, measure the area (length x width) and then decide how deep you want the material spread. For example, to cover a 10m² garden bed with mulch to a depth of 100mm (0.1m), you'll need 1 cubic metre of mulch. Online calculators or in-store advice can help you convert your measurements into cubic metres or bag quantities. It’s always a good idea to get a little extra to account for settling or uneven ground.

  • What’s the difference between topsoil and garden soil?

Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil and usually contains a mix of sand, silt, clay and some organic matter. It’s commonly used to level lawns or as a base layer. Garden soil, on the other hand, is topsoil enriched with compost, nutrients and conditioners—making it more suitable for planting vegetables, flowers or shrubs. If you're building up garden beds or planting directly, garden soil is typically the better choice due to its improved structure and fertility.
